La fin d'un chapitre/ The End of a Chapter

(English version follows)

Nouveau chapitre, nouvelle histoire.

-------------------------------------------------

It is time to turn the final page on a chapter that had a huge impact on my life.

Taking time to reminisce, it doesn't go without saying how important my years in the Rouge et Or were. They really were some of the most intense and played a big role in my life.

We can say that High School represents a huge part of someone’s life and memories. Living and growing  those five years in one specific environment, it goes the same for me when we talk about my life as a varsity athlete.

It sounds funny to talk like that about a stretch of five years, when we know that it represents a fifth of my life. Relatively, no matter your age, we can safely say that a fifth of someone’s life represent many events.

And God knows what happened during those 5 years.

I am not the kid I was at 19. I’ve learned. Gained knowledge. Grown. I’ve had love stories. Struggles. Not to mention some conflicts. I’ve lived sleepless nights and had long days. I’ve forged friendships, meaningful relationships and I’ve been a confidant. I’ve had accomplishments and failures. I have became more mature.

Lots of things happen when you attend university. But you know it all : more than anything, I ran.

But I didn’t run alone. I ran as part of a team.

In that statement lies the meaning of this chapter. When you run as part of a team, you develop pride and brotherhood. You learn to live with the others, but you also learn to live for the others. You become humble, determined and competitive. But more than anything, you stick together to overcome struggles; may they be physical, like a 10k XC, or personal.

I am really proud to have worn the Rouge et Or singlet over the past five years.

I am also very proud to see the Rouge et Or track and field and cross-country club doing so well and having a promising future. It is truly touching to witness the heritage that has developed over the years. I am blessed to have been a part of it.

Thanks to my teammates and to my coach for all these incredible moments we shared. I know that my career as a track athlete is far from over, but running for oneself will never ever be like running for my university, for his teammates or, should I say, my family.

Changes

New chapter, new story. As far as I can see the future will be dedicated to running full time. Training, with the goal to make national teams and participate in the most prestigious invitational events.

To do so, we have to do everything we can to gain the most out of this lifestyle. Different yearly training periodization, financial ressources, team support and optimal training conditions. Also, let’s not forget to have fun while doing all this!

I have decided to continue my path with Félix-Antoine as my coach; you do not change a winning combination, and after 5 years together, we’re just starting to master my body and it’s reactions.
I will run under the club affiliation of Club d’athlétisme de l’Université Laval, but I will also represent ASICS Canada by wearing their colours nationally and internationally. (For those who wouldn’t have guessed!)

One major change that will happen and that I am excited to officially announce is that I will move temporarily in Vancouver to spend my winters. Those who have had a chance to speak with me on a daily basis know that I do not have any tolerance left for Québec’s winters. That said, winters will now be periods where I will run a lot of volume, made much easier by the fact that I won’t have a collegiate indoor season. And I really believe good weather is necessary to sustain a high volume program safely.

I will join my friends at the BC endurance project from the months of November to March. I will be able to do some workouts with the likes of Luc Bruchet, Kelly Wiebe, Dylan Wykes and company, without compromising my personal plan with Félix-Antoine. I will train under the surveillance of coach Richard Lee while in Vancouver. I am really happy and excited about this «partnership»!

In the summers, I will come back to Québec city to train with my friends from the Rouge et Or. Quebec will be my base between summer races, but will also be where I’ll take vacations in the fall, and where I will start my yearly build up in September and October.

Yes, an important chapter is now over, but another one as exciting is waiting for me ahead!
