It was only a matter of time before Sony released a “slim” version of the PlayStation 5. Rumors have intensified a few months ago when in the middle of the legal process to buy Activision Blizzard, Microsoft said that the Japanese company is preparing to materialize the aforementioned movement this year.
We now know that these comments were true. Sony announced this Tuesday the release of a new PS5 model. We are facing a device that, without departing from the original lines, produces a more restrained form factor. All this, as usual, without compromising on features and power.
What is the new PS5 “Slim”?
The new PS5, unofficially known as the ‘Slim’, is lighter than the original and has The volume is 30% lower. One of the keys to achieving this result was making the Blu-ray drive a removable component that was used only when needed.

As we can see from the images, the design of the PS5 changes slightly. This version includes four separate panels. The top two have a glossy finish and the bottom two are matte. This change is just elementary for a removable optical drive.
Sony has developed a system that allows you to maintain the neatness of the device with and without a removable disk. To use the Blu-ray drive we will have to remove the lower right panelposition the device and add a new cover that perfectly matches the design and lines of the PS5.
Changes also reach the storage section. Recall that the PS5, released in 2020, offered us a SSD disk with 825 GB of space, but we had about 667 to save our games. Now, finally, we will have a unit with 1 TB of memory.
Price and availability of the new PS5 “Slim”
The new PS5 “Slim” will be available in the European market from November. The version with a removable Blu-ray Ultra HD drive will cost €549.99. The digital version, for its part, will reach 449.99 euros. It should be noted that this new model is supposed to replace the original.
So, explains Sony, once the original models are sold out, users we can only buy the new version. Likewise, if we choose the digital alternative, we will be able to purchase the optical drive separately for €119.99 to use in our new console.
In any case, the “Slim” version of the PS5 will arrive with support for horizontal use of the console. Sony is also offering a new vertical stand compatible with all versions of the PS5. This will be sold separately and will cost €29.99.
