Square Enix begins a wave of layoffs in Europe and North America

According to VGC’s Andy Robinson, a wave of layoffs has begun at Square Enix.

Robinson’s sources indicate that Takashi Kiru, the president of Square Enix, confirmed in a meeting with the workers of the European and North American divisions that the Japanese company is planning a restructuring in both territories.

These layoffs, the extent of which is not yet known, will take place over the next month. This will mainly affect the IT department, publishing and the indie division of Square Enix Collective.

The workers who are going to be laid off will be informed during this week; A consultation period will begin in the UK, but in the United States they can leave their post by the end of the month.

Square Enix released its fiscal year results yesterday, detailing a new three-year long-term growth strategy that included more multi-platform launches and a focus on fewer, higher-quality games.

One of the items in the plan was to “rebuild from the ground up” its operations in Europe and North America, which led to layoffs in both divisions.
