La Jornada – Banking cyberattacks in Mexico: 111 thousand blocks, Kaspersky reports

Mexico City. Between August 2024 and June 2025, Mexico blocked 111,000 cyber attacks aimed at stealing credentials and information from banking users, according to a recent report by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

According to the latest Kaspersky Threat Panorama, in Latin America, the region that includes our country, there were a total of 1,800,000 banking Trojans blocked during the reporting period.

The above means that around 5,000 cyber-attacks aimed at stealing bank credentials were blocked on average every day during this period.

Kaspersky clarified that the total number of blockings decreased by 45 percent compared to the same period a year ago, however, “the danger has not decreased, it has only transformed.”

The firm’s report shows that there is a change in the approach of cybercriminals, with attacks now moving from computers to mobile devices as a result of the increased use of smart mobile devices for financial transactions.

“So far this year, three active families of banking Trojans have already been identified for Android (devices), compared to just one in the previous period, reflecting the adaptability and sophistication of financial cybercrime,” Kaspersky said.

According to Fabio Assolini, director of Kaspersky’s global research and analytics group in Latin America, the transition to a mobile environment is accompanied by rapid technical evolution, and criminals are looking to implement attacks targeting mobile phones.

“Cybercriminals have developed and perfected advanced techniques, such as automated transfer system (ATS) attacks that automate the theft of funds directly from a victim’s device, and the use of remote administration tools (RATs) that guarantee full access and control over the device, allowing manipulation of banking applications without the user’s knowledge.”

“This focus on increasingly sophisticated mobile tactics demonstrates that financial cybercrime has not only adapted, but is also setting new mobile threat trends in the region,” the firm’s executive noted.

Recent attacks

According to the latest data on 2025 cyber incidents in the national financial system reported to the Bank of Mexico or the National Banking and Securities Commission, two financial institutions have had their ATMs targeted by cyber attacks this year.

According to official information, these violations caused more than 33 million pesos in damages to two banking firms.

A recent investigation by the Competitive Intelligence Unit (CIU) found that at least 13.5 million Internet users in Mexico have fallen victim to a cyber scam known as phishingand on an average they lost eight thousand and 750 pesos when breached.

He phishing It is a method in which cybercriminals distribute emails, messages or make calls on behalf of financial institutions, delivery companies, among others, and try to get people to give them sensitive information, such as passwords or bank details, in order to steal their resources.

Kaspersky recommendations

To avoid banking Trojan attacks, Kaspersky experts recommend that users be careful with links and attachments in e-mails and messages: before clicking on a link or opening an attachment, you should make sure that the message comes from a trusted sender.

The cyber security firm also advised to keep apps on mobile phones and computers up to date, use strong and unique passwords, activate two-factor authentication and, in any case, have a good antivirus.
