It is difficult to point directly to one person and say that he will go down in history as the “creator of genre X”, but Richard Harriott can boast of having achieved this achievement. After all, it’s about the creative popularly known as “Lord Britton” who coined the very term “MMORPG” (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) thanks to his good work in the mythical Ultima online. In short, he is a professional who can attract the attention of the entire industry with just the mention of a new project. However, the last of them remained a far cry from the perfection his fans expected: Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues.
At the beginning of the last decade, Shroud of the Avatar managed to establish itself as one of the most anticipated parts of MMORPG fans. And this is achieved not only by the fact that Lord British is leading the project, but also by all the promises that were made before the development began: according to what was drawn up MeinMMOthis title was looking for to return the genre to its former glory through mechanisms such as the ability to write your own story (whether you’re an adventurer or a simple trader), a more advanced combat system, a story full of decisions, and more. These words, as well as the presence of Geriott in the title, evoked su Kickstarter initial reach your fundraising goal quickly 1 million dollarscompleting the 2013 fundraising campaign with a fee A total of almost 2 million. In short, the public eagerly awaited a new installment of Richard Garriot, but this was only the beginning of a rather exciting free fall.
Early reviews and high hopes for Early Access
Despite public complaints, Shroud of the Avatar managed to gross over $15 million in total.
Many of you will probably be surprised to learn that the project managed to raise almost $2 million on Kickstarter alone, a campaign that was largely based on promises mentioned above and the figure of Lord Britt as a lawsuit. But the game hasn’t hit the brakes in terms of revenue; after its early access premiereShroud of the Avatar broke the 4 million barrier and years later he did the same with an impressive number 15 million dollars.
In other words, the monetization of the project paid off. Shroud of the Avatar allowed users to buy houses in the virtual universe in exchange for hundreds of dollars; a phenomenon that has spread to the sale of digital locks worth $12,000, to mention a prominent example. The community wasn’t too happy with the development team’s methods to get more money, but everyone knew what was really important ultimate gameplay and relatable stories in this fantasy world.
Now, how was the gaming experience during this early access? Well… Of course, not what the community expected. Criticism focused especially on graphics quality and missing much of the promised content earlier. But being a very early version of the game, many users defended Lord British’s project in the hope that their dreams would come true with the final release. Unfortunately, even with time things did not improve.

Final launch and hard fall of players
Shroud of the Avatar currently has around 20-50 players playing at the same time.
Following the line of its early access, the the final version of the Shroud of the Avatar Released in 2018, it was even more criticized by the public. After all, even his staunchest defenders saw the game through did not keep all promises announced during their Kickstarter campaign. And this resulted in a very low number of simultaneous players, especially when you consider that the title is defined as a massively multiplayer online mode: according to data registered with Steam, Early access had a maximum 50-200 simultaneous users; With his release, this number only increased 587.
We are not talking about total numbers, as Steam is only one of the platforms that offered the long-awaited Shroud of the Avatar. In that sense, CEO Chris Spears said that for now three-quarters of the public have played MMORPGs through their own launcher. However, Valve’s data leads us to think of a very weak launch, which may have led to the following notable change in the title: a few months after the premiere, became a play for free available to everyone. This strategy, however, also failed to attract the attention of users. According to the data of SteamDBthe Lord Briton’s project reached its peak 624 simultaneous players about seven years ago; Currently, the platform shows that the MMORPG is only accumulating 20-50 persons at the same time and its overall assessment is in c 52% positive reviews.
As usual in these cases, problems with the Shroud of the Avatar were also noticed by the studio responsible for its development. After several rumors of bankruptcy, strategies to turn players into company investors and a wave of layoffs, the creators decided sell the MMORPG along with the rights and assets another company. The new owners, however, led by the aforementioned Chris Spears, are done do without the figure of Lord Briton in the title. As such, the original creator of the Shroud of the Avatar no longer played an important role in its development.
Currently, the MMORPG continues to receive some updates, and as we mentioned above in this text, it still continues to entertain a small handful of players. For his part, Richard Harriott has started development on another MMORPG, which, while aiming to be a modern version of the popular Ultima, has already received some criticism for rely on NFTs. We’ll see how this new project goes, but when it comes to the Shroud of the Avatar, it’s clear that Lord Britty did not release the revolutionary MMORPG that fans have been waiting for.
