We dedicate September’s recommended mmorpg to another classic and, to date, the best representation of creativity JRR Tolkien in a game with online features. “The Lord of the Rings Online” appeared in our homes in 2007, and since then it has become a way for many to bring hobbits, elves, elves and other fantasy creatures from the famous trilogy to life.

The Lord of the Rings Online comes from a premise that shows the books from a different perspective than what is already known, particularly in terms of viewing the progress of the Fellowship of the Ring from a more delayed perspective. Thus, our hero, friends and other characters that we will meet during the adventure will leave their native places to follow the path that Frodo, Sam and the rest of the heroes have already walked before them.
The idea itself is wonderful because we have no pressure to be ring bearers, nor the urgency of reaching Mordor to destroy the precious – for many – treasure as soon as possible. This opens up opportunities in the story to learn more about Middle-earth, its problems and other dangers that can arise in such a beloved universe. The latter, in fact, intersects many times in the main plot.

The story consists of different books and chapters that we will discover as the story progresses, and although it is not entirely recommended, we can load our characters just by completing this chapter. On the other hand, there are many characters throughout Middle-earth who need our help for all sorts of tasks, which of course also offer rewards in the form of better equipment, money, experience or reputation.
Speaking of a game based on the most famous literary work John Ronald Reuel Tolkien one wonders if, apart from the perilous journey to Mordor, we know more details that were not added in the original books but were added in others such as The Hobbit or The Silmarillion, even in The Unfinished Tales! The answer is yes, and even some missions will take us back in time to relive passages that appeared in some of Tolkien’s works. And all with a fascinating amount of detail and love for the books of the South African writer.
PvE rules
There are thousands of missions to complete in Lord of the Rings. While many of them are clones, as with almost every title in the genre, there are many that are very well done on a story level. In fact, it is rare to see some of them not exceeding three paragraphs of text to put us in context. however, 140 levels completing missions non-stop can suffocate even the most talented.
To make things a little more enjoyable, we have two different options open to us: participating in a Skirmish or going through dungeons to quickly gain additional experience and take home treasure in the form of equipment, decorations or supplies. The first option experiences various historical events from a passage of Tolkien or from the game itself with the help of an uncontrollable character that we can change at will. For example, we can star in a certain scene in Windtop fighting the Nazgul and other known creatures.

As for the second one, there is not much to say, as this is a mechanic already known in many mmorpgs. Teams of three or more players come together to complete a dungeon, hunting down various chapter bosses and earning rewards upon completion. Although they didn’t invent the bicycle, it’s safe to say that many of them – especially at the mid-high levels and above – have very original, complex and fun mechanics. Between missions, dungeons and skirmishes, we have at our disposal a variety of activities, also focused on the confrontation between players and the environment. For example, housing. In LOTRO we can buy a house for our character in different regions of Middle Earth. Be it an Elven, Gandarian, Rohirrim or Dwarven house among others, they can all be modified both externally and internally. We can decorate the garden, add welcome music for visitors, completely personalize the interior by adding paintings, flooring, walls, lighting or furniture. If you’ve ever imagined yourself in Tolkien’s universe, LOTRO makes it possible.

It’s also pretty extensive, though it’s about to get easier with an update that will update that system to resemble other, more current titles. The combat isn’t much different from any other mmorpg, but it has a unique feature that makes it so more strategic at a certain time and that has not been seen in any other known title. It will be called Society maneuver (maneuver between colleagues) and is usually used by very strict bosses. When you launch it, four different colored icons appear in the middle of the screen, each with a function that everyone in the group must click. Depending on the combination entered, different effects will occur, such as restoring health to the party, dealing direct or periodic damage to the enemy, restoring mana, or a mixture of everything.
And of course we have a dungeon for raiding parties. From destroy the Balrog, defeat Saruman, relive part of the Battle of Pelennor or fight various dragons and creatures known from Tolkien’s legendarium. Although, as with most titles, only the newest ones are usually used, there will always be people who want to replay them or discover them for the first time.

Another reason LOTRO shines is its role-playing capabilities, i.e. playing a known or unknown character, going on adventures with other friends, recreating a play, a grand party, organizing concerts or simply reading the tales of Middle-earth anywhere on the map. Many tools and scripts have been prepared for this true fantasy for fans.
Unfortunately, that’s where most falter Lord of the rings online It is in the Player vs Player section. It exists and even gives a twist by adding context, missions, levels and other features, but it is hardly played by LOTRO fans and they do not make it their main pastime. Its graphics have stood the test of time well thanks to the fact that its developers tried to make the game always work with the latest technology, but at the end of the day the engine is what it is. This is noticeable in viewing distance and the ability to visualize sets at a distance, how performance degrades in cities such as Minas Tirith and even in the animation and design of the main characters and enemies, perhaps what scares new players the most.

Over the past few months, Standing Stone Games updated this aspect of the game by adding and/or improving some existing models, polishing the textures, adding a new class —River Hobbit— with more customization options and other details to make LOTRO adapt to the new times. It still has its bumps, but the company’s efforts to support the game are commendable, to say the least. Along with the former, we also have a wonderful soundtrack that is very much in line with what you would expect to find in these fictional locations and with tunes that will accompany you at any moment of your life. But be careful, this section also has some ups and downs, although it’s the least.
It is kept under free model and subscription model, the second is more interesting, although little by little the restrictions on F2P accounts are being lifted. The player can use it up to about level 100 for free, then they have to purchase the following add-ons if they want to max out and enjoy the whole story. However, you can earn coins for the in-game store by completing missions, achievements, and other types of content, so there’s plenty of content to be gained just by playing. There are also subscription-only classic servers based on older rigged versions of the game. They are not very loyal, but they also have their own audience that passionately supports them.
