Pokemon players reveal the funniest names they’ve ever given their opponents

Pokemon fans have revealed the funny names they gave back to their rivals when the games allowed players to rename them.

One of the recurring elements of the Pokemon series is the rival Pokemon trainer who competes with you throughout the game. They can be friendly characters like Neman in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, or total jerks like Blue from Pokemon Red & Blue.

In many cases, the antagonist is the most memorable character in the game, as they face the player in battle throughout the story and sometimes fight alongside them against a common enemy. By the end of the game, the opponent is usually one of the toughest opponents.

In the early Pokemon games, players could rename their opponents, though this became much less common as time went on, even though Pokemon had yet to adopt voice acting.

A user on Pokemon Reddit started a thread asking players what they called their opponents in the old games. This has led to some hilarious results, as many players have renamed their opponents in ways that make fun of them throughout the story.

“NEWMAN,” one Seinfeld fan wrote, while another said, “I distinctly remember taking an opponent for a clean coin during Gen 2 and calling him a ‘???’.” When I learned that it was supposed to be anything, I kept calling him ‘Pordanak’ in later games.”

“I remember when I was a kid I didn’t know a lot of bad words, so I called my competitor ‘Hot Mom,'” wrote another user, “for some reason I took that as an insult.”

Many people also used inappropriate or swear words as names for their opponents, but these were not used in later games as the developers introduced a word filter that prevented certain terms from being used as names.

Similar to naming Pokemon during a Nuzlocke run, naming your opponent something funny is a way to ensure you never forget them. Sure, a lot of these names are immature, but they’re funny and help liven up characters that might otherwise be boring.
