Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released on February 29th and is a limited-time PS5 exclusive. It’s expected to arrive on PC at a later date, although we don’t have an exact release date confirmed for compatible devices yet. It’s normal for it to take six months to a year to become available, and it doesn’t look like it will have an Xbox Series X and Series S version.
The graphics quality that Square Enix achieved in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is very high, but Hamaguchi confirmed that the title does not use Unreal Engine 5, but is still based on Unreal Engine 4, the same engine used in for Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS4 and PS5. This graphics engine has been around for years, although it has been updated several times to stay current.
The reason why they decided to use Unreal Engine 4 and not Unreal Engine 5, according to the official version, is because there are parts of the engine that are still being developed and therefore some of the features they need are missing. That’s why they decided to develop these features themselves and use Unreal Engine 4 to get the game to players faster.
With Unreal Engine 5, the demand on the hardware is higher and this could also affect the final quality of the game on the PS5. There’s at least one more installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake, and it’s supposed to launch in three to four years (2027 or 2028), so we’re guessing they’ll have already decided to switch to Unreal Engine 5 by then.
