Lenovo water cooling technology is the brain behind the sophistication of Formula 1

Jakarta – Formula 1 and Lenovo announced the introduction of Lenovo Neptune Liquid Cooling, an innovative cooling technology that dramatically improves performance while increasing energy efficiency by up to 40 percent.

The Lenovo Neptune solution offers more optimized High Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities and is the ideal solution to support F1’s long-term sustainability strategy by supporting F1’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) system at the F1 Media Technology Centre, Biggin Hill.

This is possible thanks to the introduction of liquid cooling Lenovo Neptune. The solution integrates directly into the Lenovo ThinkSystem SD665-N V3 server and uses warm water to remove heat at the processor level, significantly reducing the energy needed to cool high-density computing.

“Lenovo Neptune liquid cooling is fundamentally at the heart of Formula 1’s technological infrastructure. It allows Formula 1 to expand the scale and complexity of its drive systems while meeting the demands of efficiency, reliability and sustainability.” Technological director Lenovo, Tolga Kurtoglu.

As part of its long-term global partnership with Formula 1, Lenovo offers end-to-end technology solutions that support racing operations as well as general business needs.

More than 600 F1 employees rely on Lenovo servers and AI-enabled devices – from AI-enabled laptops, monitors and workstations to Motorola tablets and smartphones – to collaborate around the world and deliver world-class viewing to 1.6 billion viewers each year.

Every race weekend, Formula 1 builds the Event Technical Center (ETC), the world’s largest and most complex portable facility in its category, on the track.

Here, F1 collects a wide range of data, from real-time timing, car telemetry and tire data to team radio communications, camera views and audio streams, with Lenovo’s virtualization platform providing the computing power to handle all of these operations.

Over the course of the race weekend, approximately 600TB of live data will be transmitted directly between the ETC and the Formula 1 Media Technology Center (M&TC) in Biggin Hill, England, F1’s main data and broadcast hub and Liquino’s main deployment location.

The facility hosts more than 180 custom software systems containing more than four million pieces of code, all supported by Lenovo’s infrastructure.
