An app that is the swiss army knife of PC gaming

most of Games for PC They are not perfect. I’d venture to say that most of them have issues, especially with the disastrous PC launches we’ve seen this year. If the game is popular and open enough, you can rely on community mods to improve the state of your game. but, what if there was an app that could improve your performance and add missing features everything Your computer games?

There is, and it’s called Special K from developer Kaldaien. It was originally created as a tool to fix problems in the PC versions Fallout 4 in Batman: Arkham Knight. Since then, it’s pretty much become the self-proclaimed “Swiss Army Knife” of PC game modding.

It’s a tool every gamer should have in their back pocket.

everything can be done

HDR overlay for Special K mod.

You may have heard of the Special K, but you probably have the same question as many people: What does it do? This is such a common question that the three main questions in the Special K Wiki FAQ cover the specifics of the app.

Broadly speaking, here’s what you can do with Special K:

  • Introduces customizable HDR to DirectX 11, DirectX 12, and OpenGL games
  • Texture caching in DirectX 11 games to improve performance
  • Mod textures in DirectX 11 games
  • Set up notifications for Steam achievements
  • Bring Nvidia Reflex to any game
  • Disable, enable and customize input for games and other windows (eg unlock mouse cursor, keep keyboard and mouse active on one screen but not another)
  • Adjust the size and position of the window
  • Download DLL files like ReShade from the game
  • Set maximum in-focus and out-of-focus frame rates
  • Adjust audio channels individually
  • Monitor system performance at a very granular level
  • Offers an extensive frame limiter with options to improve consistency
  • Make custom mods for particularly problematic games like Starfield, Elden Ring in Nier: Automata

And would you believe me when I say it can do even more? It breaks down the walls set up by developers in PC gaming, allowing you to enable certain features and customize the way you play. And it provides extensive monitoring tools that no other application can match.

However, I found it most useful for HDR. I have an Alienware 34 QD-OLED and bought the monitor specifically for the inky black color which looks stellar in HDR gaming. Most games simply don’t have great HDR or no HDR at all. I’ve only been playing for the last three weeks Star field in Lying P, which lack native HDR. Turn on Special K, turn on HDR, and both games look better than ever.

Even in games that support HDR, the Special K delivers torment more settings. You can adjust the saturation and midpoint of the colors and even get a color gamut reading to see if your screen can display everything on the screen. I’d rather adjust the look of the game to my screen than enable HDR and hope that the in-game settings provide enough bandwidth.

Frame rate limiter in Special K mod.

I’ve also used it a lot to enable Nvidia Reflex. There are many Nvidia Reflex games out there, but most of them are multiplayer shooters where latency is paramount. Enabling Reflex nearly halved my latency star field, makes the game much more responsive. He also helped in Lying Pthough mostly as a way to confirm if I really didn’t defend a perfect attack.

Reflex is an option through the Special K frame rate limiter. This frame rate limiter is a lot bigger than you probably expect. It takes control of the DirectX paging chain and provides options to improve latency and frame rate depending on the version of DirectX and version of Windows you are using. You can check out the Special K documentation if you want to dig into the details, but the Special K frame rate limiter is very powerful.

Finally, there are monitoring options. Special K provides frame rate and frame time readings, but also provides overlays for overall render latency broken down by task, GPU metrics, and even thread usage. The latter is essential for understanding how your game is taking advantage of the CPU, and Special K even provides tools to increase thread priority.

Settings for Special K mod on PC.

All the settings of the game also do not disappear when it is closed. Special K creates configuration files for each game that you can customize in a text editor. Every time you start the game, you will get the same settings without having to open the app.

Game-specific optimizations

Special K is designed as a global app that can work with any game (or mostly any game, since certain graphics APIs require some workarounds). However, there are game-specific optimizations that are particularly problematic.

As already mentioned, the program was originally created for Fallout 4 in Batman: Arkham Knight, but the list of game optimizations has exploded. Has improved frame rate for Final Fantasy XVediting textures for Nier: Automata, and PlayStation frame rate and button unlock for Elden Ring. The latest versions focus on star field, adding features like brightness slider and field of view adjustment.

And in new versions of the program, these optimizations are performed automatically. No need to download anything else. Instead, there’s a Special K launcher that will automatically load optimizations when you launch the game.

There won’t be optimizations for every PC release, but you can be sure that someone will be working on fixes for mass releases like Star field. The community around Special K is also large, so you can find workarounds if Special K conflicts with other programs.

And there is much more

Other features in Special K mod on PC.

Of course, Special K can also adjust the noise of your Steam achievements, but you can also disable the Steam overlay and other overlays like GeForce Experience. Special K can even try to pass DRM checks for games that aren’t always online. Then there’s texture modification, where you can dump textures from DirectX 11 games and replace them with your own.

The best thing you can do is download Special K and see how it works for the games you play. I’m sure you’ll find at least a few uses for it. It’s free, open source, and has a huge community, so there’s nothing to wait for.

The only caveat is online games. Special K introduces the mod so that games that use anti-cheat programs are more likely to flag it, which can lead to account bans. Fortunately, you can easily disable Special K before launching multiplayer games, and you can also create a blacklist of games that the program will ignore.

If you’re not using Special K, do yourself a favor and download it to see how it works. In return, consider supporting the developer on Patreon. It’s a free, open source program that’s very useful, and Patreon shows that Kaldaien earns only about $290 a month from it.
