- Google Cameo adds support for Windows apps to ChromeOS
- The future seems to be in web computing for end users
- Virtualized applications provide greater security and performance
After acquiring Cameo in June 2024, Google relaunched the service as a virtual program delivery solution called “Cameyo by Google”.
The tool will allow legacy Windows-based apps to run in Chrome or as a web app without the need for a full virtual desktop, a big step for ChromeOS, which despite its popularity in education has often been shunned due to its incompatibility with traditional software.
Product manager Rob Bird explained that Google Cameo will make it easier for organizations to migrate from Windows to ChromeOS, and for good reason.
Google wants to help you run apps on ChromeOS
A blog post details the growing popularity of ChromeOS: Nine in 10 IT leaders say their end-user computing (EUC) strategy is web-based, but 50% of apps in use today are still legacy client apps.
Cameo works by streaming only the apps you need, rather than virtualizing your entire desktop, meaning older Windows and Linux apps can run alongside more modern web apps. Users can also use browser apps or progressive web apps (PWAs) for a more natural experience.
“For the user, the experience is seamless and does not require the context switching associated with managing a separate virtual desktop environment. For IT, the complexities are removed,” Baird wrote.
Google also notes that deploying applications using Cameo is safer and faster than using traditional virtualization technologies.
Beard also used the message to plug Chrome Enterprise Premium, which combines with Cameo to provide security in modern web applications and legacy client applications. “These legacy applications that used to reside on the desktop now run in a single security context in a secure browser.”
“This collaboration with Cameo has proven to be incredibly successful in helping organizations move away from complex legacy applications and improve security and productivity,” added ChromeOS director of product management Naveen Vishwanath at the time of the acquisition last year.
