The Linux gaming community has reached a new milestone. According to data from Valve’s latest Steam hardware survey, which corresponds to October 2025, the penguin operating system exceeded 3% of the platform’s total user base for the first time. In particular, Linux systems now represent 3.05% of all users assets.

These data represent monthly growth of 0.41% and marks the highest share for Linux since Steam debuted on that system more than a decade ago. To put this in perspective, in October 2024, Linux accounted for barely 2.00% of gamers. Meanwhile, Windows continues to dominate with 94.84%, though falls below 95% for the first time in months, and macOS remains steady at 2.11%. As for Apple hardware, Asahi Linux is an alternative to Apple Silicon laptops.
Impact of SteamOS and AMD hardware
Obviously, one of the main factors behind this growth is the success of the company Steam Deck de Valve and other portable notebooks using SteamOS or Proton-based Linux distributions. A breakdown of the data by operating system shows that SteamOS already represents approx a third (27%) of all Linux-based gaming systems. It also helps that 9 out of 10 Windows games already run on this system.

This trend is also reflected in the choice of accessories. According to the survey, AMD continues to lead in CPU usage among Linux users with a The share is 67.1%.while Intel represents 32.9%. AMD’s dominance is not surprising given that the Steam Deck uses AMD’s processor.

I’m a computer systems engineer, I started experimenting with the Pentium II, although my business has always been software. After I switched from Windows 95 to Windows 98, I didn’t stop installing systems. I had the Linux era and was one of those asking for a free Canonical CD. I currently use macOS for work and have a Windows 11 laptop on which I also installed Chrome OS Flex. In short, experiment, test and push buttons.
