RPG giant Square Enix has apparently canceled several games to focus on its most profitable projects. We’ll tell you where this and other data came from here!
Square Enix, the company behind the Final Fantasy saga (did we tell you we were considering FF16 DLC?) and Kingdom Hearts, seems to have canceled some games in development. The obvious reason is that the company intends to be more selective in its projects in the future.
The news follows an official statement regarding Square Enix’s holdings, which explains that the company is suffering a loss of ¥22.1 billion, or roughly $140 million. “At a meeting convened on March 27, 2024, the Board of Directors of Square Enix Holdings voted, in light of the myriad changes occurring in the environment around its group, to review the group’s approach to high definition (HD) game development. with the intention of being more selective and targeted in allocating resources for development,” they explained.
“Based on close examination, the company expects to recognize approximately ¥22.1 billion in content abandonment losses on its books for the fiscal year ending March 2024,” the company concluded.
While potential game cancellations may seem pessimistic, it appears that Square Enix is adjusting its development approach to ensure that the games it releases are hits, or at least financially viable. However, it seems that about $140 million worth of games in development have been scrapped, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever know what each one was about.
The fallen could be anything from Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest spin-offs to less popular sagas like Bravely Default or the Mana saga.
This information comes after the launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which Square Enix released for sale in February. This year in July, it will also launch Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, a new expansion for the MMO that will begin a new saga for the long-running game.
