Square Enix has laid out a new plan for the next three fiscal years that will see it cut back on high-definition games to focus on quality and a multi-platform strategy.

The company aims to maximize its catalog of video games, betting on quality over quantity, to offer “unforgettable experiences” and “ensure excitement,” according to its medium-term plan, set out to March 31, 2027, when its fiscal year ends.

To that end, Square Enix will regularly release Triple A titles from its core franchises and a selection of games for smart devices and PCs, as part of an effort to strengthen internal development efforts.

The decision follows the group’s consolidated results for the 2024 fiscal year ended March 31, in which it recorded growth in net sales of high-definition games (Final Fantasy XVI, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster), high development and advertising costs resulted in operating losses.

The multi-platform strategy, for its part, will focus on bringing titles from the catalog to Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and PC, as well as smartphones with iOS and Android operating systems and PC in games compatible with these systems.

There will also be a greater emphasis on digital sales as, they explain, “consumer game content is increasingly being sold through downloads rather than physical bundles.” As such, they find greater growth opportunities in monetization formulas such as free-to-play games with built-in payments (free-to-play), microtransactions, and subscriptions.
