Square Enix has launched an unannounced new version of Chocobo GP that will eliminate various microtransaction elements that were in the game.
The title was intended to be a sequel to Chocobo Racing, originally released in 1999 for the PlayStation. It was released in March 2022 for the Nintendo Switch as a paid game, but its most typical free-to-play or games-as-a-service elements, such as the use of real-world currency for in-game unlocks or the availability of a season pass, have generated excellent reviews from users. In addition, there is an additional version for mobile phones and Nintendo Switch, Chocobo GP Lite, was directly a free title.
Last December, Square Enix announced the end of support for the game. However, it now seems that they have decided to re-release a new version that removes these controversial monetization elements. In this new version, all items can be unlocked in-game and there is no way to use real money to advance.
Users who have previously played Chocobo GP on any of the available platforms have the option to upgrade the game to this new version. Additionally, Chocobo GP Lite users can also upgrade their version to the new full version.
The price of this Chocobo GP version is €39.99. The original version cost 49.99 euros. It is now available, although the web version of the eShop seems to be having problems rendering the page.
