Turmoil has been around for a while, but it’s still a brilliant management game with a unique style that will test your multitasking, resource control, and disregard for the environment. Inspired by the 19th century American oil rush, you’ll gradually expand your empire with new drilling rigs, Frontier-style buildings, and a fleet of horses and wagons to transport your precious oil.
As you search for new oil fields, you will be tasked with creating complex and efficient networks of underground pipes to not only find the oil, but also bring it to the surface where it is then stored in bunkers. With fluctuating oil prices, you need to be ready to sell at a high price, but waiting too long can cause your storage to reach maximum capacity, meaning no more drilling until you switch it over – or spend your money on more bunkers.
The single-player campaign mode challenges you to become the richest oil tycoon in the West, build your city, expand your operations in different locations, and make sure that rival barons don’t push you out. There’s also a mode that gives you a randomly generated level and challenges you to earn as much money as possible in a year.
However, you can also get competitive because Turmoil lets you play against friends or random players online in a race to build the biggest oil empire possible. It’s a brilliant little control game and has a very commendable 92% user rating on Steam. However, Turmoil has just become available on the Epic Games Store, and in honor of that, it’s given the honor of being the platform’s Free Game of the Week.
