Ubisoft assures that the remake of Splinter Cell is still in progress

Ubisoft has confirmed a new round of layoffs at its Toronto studio as part of an ongoing internal restructuring process, though it has assured that the remake Splinter Cell continues in development without changes. The company said around 40 employees – equivalent to around 8% of the studio’s staff – will be affected by the move, which is part of a wider adjustment within the French publisher.

Studio Ubisoft Toronto, previously responsible for titles such as Watch Dogs: Legion in Far Cry 6will continue to be an important pillar in the organization despite the cuts. In a statement, the company said the decision “does not reflect the talent or dedication” of the affected workers and said it would offer compensation packages and support for their relocation.

According to the company, the team will continue to collaborate on various internal projects and continue development of the remake Splinter Celloriginally announced in 2021. This project is being rebuilt using the Snowdrop engine, which is also used in Department in Star Wars. Outside the law— in order to modernize the visual department and strengthen the characteristic elements of the saga, such as dynamic lighting and stealth.

The layoffs are part of Ubisoft’s so-called “great reboot,” a corporate reorganization that seeks to cut costs and rethink its creative structure with more autonomous teams. The plan has already resulted in the cancellation of six games, the postponement of seven other projects and the closure of two studios, in addition to proposed additional staff cuts at its Paris headquarters. The company plans to cut fixed costs by around 200 million euros over the next two years.
