Square Enix will make changes to improve the use of blockchain, Web3 and AI

Multimedia entertainment company Square Enix is working to modify its organizational structure and optimize the allocation of company resources to support a new focus on the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain/Web3 and cloud technologies in 2024.

Square Enix president Takashi Kiru announced the ongoing changes in a blog post titled “New Year’s Letter from the President.”

“Earlier, we identified three priority investment areas: blockchain/Web 3.0 entertainment, artificial intelligence and the cloud. Last year, we redefined our overall mission and goals for these three areas. We are currently working on modifying our organizational structure and optimizing the allocation of resources to support these efforts.”

Kiru also stated that Square Enix intends to “aggressively apply artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies” to develop and publish content.

The company president further hinted that the company will adopt generative artificial intelligence technologies. Referring specifically to ChatGPT, Kiru said that artificial intelligence has transcended the realm of academic debate.

“I believe that generative artificial intelligence can not only change what we create, but also fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming.”

Blockchain and Web3 technologies were briefly mentioned in the letter, though Kiru did not elaborate on the company’s near-term ambitions in those areas.

Square Enix is perhaps best known for its Final Fantasy multimedia franchise. It is also among the largest developers/publishers of titles that combine blockchain/Web 3 technologies with traditional video games.

As recently reported by Cointelegraph, in December 2023, Square Enix launched an NFT-based project called Symbiogenesis. According to the company, this new IP is an interactive art experience that includes collectibles and storytelling.
