Next year, Microsoft may find itself with an unexpected new competitor in the computer sector, with the launch Aluminum OS, a new operating system based on Android that Google is developing.
That’s the name of a project Google is leading to conquer the PC market with a system built from the ground up with artificial intelligence, according to a recent job posting posted on LinkedIn.
The offer is looking for a “Senior Product Manager” for Taiwan, specializing in Android, laptops and tablets; the description contains references to the new “Aluminum OS”, which has not yet been officially unveiled.
It’s possible that the name “Aluminum OS” is intended for internal use, as has always been the case with Android with candy names, and that the commercial name of the new system is different.
Regardless of the final name, it’s clear that Aluminum OS will replace Chrome OS, although Google clarifies that both systems will initially coexist for a while, so Chromebooks aren’t going away overnight.
That’s why Aluminum OS designed for “premium device and experience”therefore, initially Google will continue to support Chrome OS to close the shortage of cheap laptops that are so successful in some markets.

But it’s inevitable that Chrome OS will be abandoned in favor of a new system being developed to offer a more complete and advanced experience, and Gemini and artificial intelligence are expected to weigh heavily.
In the proposal, Google assumes that Aluminum OS is coming “designed with artificial intelligence at its core”so it won’t be the base system with Gemini, as happened with Chrome OS.
So Google wants to introduce its new operating system as a single desktop prepared for the new era of artificial intelligenceand hopefully it will have features that are not possible in Chrome OS or even Windows 11.
Therefore, the end of Chrome OS is confirmedafter years of its future in doubt after it failed to expand beyond cheap student laptops.
Originally, Google’s idea was to merge Chrome OS and Android into a new system, but finally this year the company confirmed that it was going to implement Chrome OS on Android.
So the new system will fully integrated with Android smartphoneseven more so than Chrome OS, which already lets you run Android apps and connect to your mobile.
It also greatly simplifies Google’s platform, which will focus on one operating system instead of supporting two at the same time; and this should translate into new apps developed for computers based on the same code as their mobile versions.
However, for current Chromebook users, this means that It is unlikely that they will get an update with Aluminum OSand that they stay with Chrome OS, which will continue to receive security updates until support ends.
