New report from information today dives into the current structure of Apple’s AI organization, now led by Craig Federighi. According to the story, Federighi was responsible for Apple’s decision to start using models from outside companies like Google.
The report also confirms previous reports that Federighi was an “AI skeptic” until he tried OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022.

The report explained that Federighi is “a miser who tightly controls salaries and is reluctant to invest in risky projects when their returns are unclear.” That’s one of the reasons he didn’t buy into the AI hype until 2022, and remains one of the “potential risks of Federighi becoming head of AI.”
Federighi “tends to scrutinize every detail of his team’s expenses, down to the budget for bananas and other office snacks,” the report said. “Federigi was troubled by the idea that hiring such people might require paying them more than Apple’s executive team earns,” the report said.
Apple’s AI group is also concerned that Federighi will “cut back on business travel and not be able to attend as many industry conferences.”
According to the report, Federighi’s lieutenants had been trying “for years” to “put him into AI.”
Apple engineers reportedly proposed a feature to Federighi that would use artificial intelligence to “dynamically” change the iPhone’s home screen. Federighi believed that such a feature would “disorientate users” who are used to knowing where their apps are. Apple offers a Siri Suggestions widget that tries to actively display apps on people’s iPhone home screens.
One of Federiga’s concerns about AI was its unpredictability. During design review meetings to review software features, you need definitive answers from your team about how those features will behave. According to people who have worked with him, Federighi prefers that software be programmed to do certain things, rather than relying on algorithms to dynamically change those behaviors.
After all, the report says that Federighi was introduced to the AI in late 2022 after testing ChatGPT. “After playing with the OpenAI chatbot, Federighi told colleagues that he appreciated this type of artificial intelligence technology and tasked his teams with ways to incorporate it into Apple products,” the report said.
Federighi now leads Apple’s AI group. Mike Rockwell is in charge of Siri and reports to Federighi. Rockwell is reported to have previously said that Federighi’s approach to software development was “too conservative and that Apple needs to think big.”
