New report from information claims that Apple is developing an AirTag-sized wearable that could be released “as early as 2027.” Here are the details.
A wearable device may appear on the market as early as 2027
According to the report, this wearable device will have multiple cameras, as well as a speaker and microphone, although “development is at a very early stage and could still be canceled.”
From the report:
The Apple Pin, which is a thin, flat circular disc with an aluminum and glass body, has two cameras (a standard lens and a wide-angle lens) on the front, designed to capture photos and videos of its surroundings, the people said. It also includes three microphones to pick up sounds in the area around the user’s face. According to the people, it has a speaker, a physical button along one edge, and a magnetic-inductive charging interface on the back similar to the one used on the Apple Watch. Apple engineers are aiming to make the pin the same size as the AirTag, just slightly thicker, one of the people said.
The report also notes that Apple is trying to speed up development in hopes of competing with the first OpenAI wearable (expected in 2026 or 2027), and that it’s unclear whether the wearable will work alongside other products like AirPods or Apple’s upcoming smart glasses.
Today’s report also notes that it’s been a challenging market for startups, citing the recent failure of Humane’s AI Pin as an example:
It’s unclear whether Apple’s pin will sell well. Humane, a startup founded by two ex-Apple employees, is struggling to gain traction in 2024 with its own AI pin, which has reportedly sold less than 10,000 units. As a result, parts of Humane were sold to HP for $116 million. The Humane Pin, which can place an interface on the user’s palm using a small projector, has been criticized for slow responses to questions and poor battery life.
Today’s news also comes as Apple revamps its AI efforts after years of struggling to deliver on AI promises made at WWDC2024, the recent departure of the company’s AI chief John Gianandrea, and the recent announcement of a partnership with Google to use Gemini as the basis for the new Siri and other Apple Intelligence-related features.
Finally, the report comes immediately after a Bloomberg Apple is reportedly working on replacing the Siri interface with an actual chatbot for iOS 27.
