Foamstars, Square Enix’s Splatoon, has seen a large loss of players in recent months

There are a few things I understand these days, and one of them is that service games rarely succeed except Hell divers 2, where their developers really do it right. But for the rest, we can already see how it will end, at first they may have a small “boom”, but then, after a few weeks, no one is talking about them, and their number of players falls down and without brakes, as in the case of Foamstars.

I do think that Foamstars, despite being “PlayStation Splatoon”, was fun but not much else. I played it with my partner Claudio and my brother, we both had a great time, but even so, It wasn’t enough to encourage people to keep playing. The latter is the most important because otherwise what we just saw in this video game happens. Let’s see everything they had to say.

Foamstars loses 95% of its players two months after launch

Released on February 6 and available on day one via PS Plus Essential, Foamstars reports in recent months, the number of players has completely decreased.

  • As researched by TrueTrophiesusing PSN gameplay data, the stylized shooter for PS5 and PS4 lost about 95% of your player count since launch ❌
  • That’s a harsh drop for any game, but for a title as a service, it’s such a statistic that it’s immediate raising questions about its longevity 🤔
  • Launching a game as a service that really gets attention is hard enough, but keeping it alive for a reasonable period of time is even more difficult 😅
  • But the hardest part of all? Regain lost ground as soon as the game begins to declinean almost impossible task when your degree is stuck in an increasingly negative perception 😞
Foam stars

Of course, it doesn’t help that Foamstars launched just two days before Helldivers 2, a game-as-a-service that was a huge hit. It’s an incredible contrast, and it just goes to show how volatile the games-as-a-service landscape is right now.

It’s also worth noting that Foamstars are subject to criticism your monetization model. Priced at €29.99, it’s not a free-to-play title, but that hasn’t stopped it from being rich with in-game purchases. some of which are incredibly expensive. Will the servers be shutting down soon? We’ll see if Square Enix makes any announcement on this.
