OpenAI restricts Sora 2 videos to free users

Google isn’t the only one putting limits on its AI. After increasing user demand, OpenAI has announced that it will limit Sora 2. The company behind ChatGPT has revealed that it will reduce the number of videos that can be created with a free account.

Director of Sora at OpenAI Bill Pebbles said they will adjust the limits for users who do not have a ChatGPT Plus subscription.

“We set usage limits for free users at 6 genes/day. ChatGPT Plus and Pro users have fixed limits and everyone can purchase additional genes as needed,” the manager mentioned in a post on his X account. Pebbles added that their GPUs are “melting” and they want to allow as many people as possible to access Sora.

Sora’s limitations come around the same time Google did the same with its AI. A few hours ago, the tech giant confirmed that Reasoning Gemini 3 Pro mode will have daily limits. Google has moved from offering 5 requests to setting dynamic limits that will change based on demand for all users with a basic account.

As if that wasn’t enough, the tech company has also reduced the number of images that can be created Nano Banana Pro. Based on the Gemini 3 Pro, this artificial intelligence has reasoning capabilities and can extract information from the web to incorporate as text into your images. Due to high demand, Google went from 3 to 2 images per day.

OpenAI servers are “melting” due to Sora 2

Sora’s boss announcement draws attention not only with limitations, but also with the phrase “Our GPUs are melting!” If we remember, that’s what Sam Altman said when ChatGPT launched AI image creation. In a matter of hours, millions of users have created all kinds of chatbot content and made some trends like Ghibli-style images popular.

Unlike ChatGPT, Sora 2 is only available in the US and Canadaso it’s even more surprising that OpenAI was outclassed. The holiday and Black Friday probably influenced this decision. The restrictions imposed on Sora 2 will only affect free users, and there is an option to purchase credits to create more videos.

It is not yet known if these restrictions are temporary or if they will become permanent. TheExcessive demand for AI for creative tasks requires more computing power than the normal inquiries we make at ChatGPT. OpenAI will probably keep this limit to ensure Sora 2 is rolled out to more countries, or to incentivize people to pay more to use it (like F2P games).
