Silent iPhone alarms: Make sure your alarm sound settings haven’t changed

If your iPhone’s alarm goes off without a sound, you can check if the alarm settings have been reset.

We’re not sure how many users are affected, but we’ve heard from a small number of people who have noticed that their iPhone’s alarm sounds have recently been changed to “None”, which means they’re ringing quietly…

It is not clear what is causing the settings to reset. This may be due to older alarm clocks using some of the “classic” sound options.

To check if you are affected by this issue, simply open the Clock app on your device and tap any alarm in the list. Make sure the ringtone is set to a sound setting and not set to none.

If the alarm is set correctly, it should sound at the specified time, regardless of whether the iPhone is in silent mode. You can test this by creating a new alarm that will sound after a few minutes.

Here are some other common reasons why your alarm goes silent if you’re having trouble:

The volume level for regular alarms is set via Settings -> Sounds and sensations. There is a slider that changes the volume of ringtones and alerts, which adjusts the volume of alarms, incoming call noises and some other notifications. If the Switch Buttons option is enabled, this slider will change when you press the physical volume buttons. To keep the alarm volume always fixed at an audible level, disable the “Change with buttons” option.

If you’ve set a dedicated sleep alarm, there’s a separate ringtone and volume slider. In the Clock app, tap the sleep alarm and scroll down. Sound options are available under the graphics wheel.

Another behavior that affects the noise level of the alarm is the Face ID attention recognition features available on all modern iPhones. When turned on, when a person is looking at the screen, the alarm sound is reduced. If you go to bed with your phone next to you, sometimes it can accidentally activate while you sleep.

The sound level in this state is not low, but low. If you want to turn off Attention, go to Settings -> Face ID & Passcode -> Attention and turn off the Attention Features toggle.
