Square Enix, the popular studio behind famous franchises such as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, made a difficult decision and canceled several of its projects, losing millions of dollars.

In a statement posted on their website, they explained that a senior management meeting had decided to cancel some games “with the intention of being more selective”.
This cancellation will result in a loss of $140 million (just over 71,460 million colones), which they called “losses due to content abandonment.”

As for what they mean by more selectivity, there isn’t much information in the document other than that they’re going to change the approach with which they develop games for consoles and PC.
They also did not say which games or projects were canceled.

In recent months, Square Enix launched Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which according to analysts did not have the expected success. Also, they are preparing to release Kingdom Hearts 4 and Dragon Quest 12 sometime next year, so it’s highly unlikely that they will be among the canceled games.
What is clear is that this decision will affect their future, and they will have to find ways to soften this heavy blow.
