They recognize fun fan theories about chronological placement games, but they admit that Nintendo only takes the timeline into account to a certain extent. They say that too much emphasis on this can limit creativity when trying to fit new ideas into a given time. They prefer to maintain creative flexibility so as not to limit the development of the game.
Also, they want players to immerse themselves and enjoy the world without imposing too rigid an interpretation on them. According to the creators, this freedom allows players to personalize the experience more.
