Google is working on a native feature that will allow Android users copy the text to your phone and paste it to your computer instantly (PC or Chromebook), and vice versa.
This feature that will come with Android 17will eliminate the dependency on third-party applications to achieve continuity, reducing the gap with the Apple ecosystem.

Cross-productivity is coming to Android 17
Seamless syncing between devices, also known as “seamless,” has historically been one of the biggest attractions of the Apple ecosystem. Google has recognized this gap and is preparing a fundamental tool for its users: the Universal clipboard.
According to the leaked information, this feature will be integrated directly into the kernel of the operating system, probably with the release Android 17and promises to change the way users smartphones and computers work together.

How does it work? The process is based on Google Play Services and a new internal module called Continuity. When you copy any text to a device (such as a Pixel phone), the change is detected, transmitted through Play Services, and instantly copied to the clipboard of the connected computer or tablet.
The function will work in both directions, allowing text to be transmitted mobile to PC and PC to mobilestreamlining repetitive tasks and professional workflows.
Apple’s initial limitations and advantage
While the arrival of text sync is a win for Android performance, the initial implementation will have serious limitations compared to its main competitor. The initial release of Android will have the Universal Clipboard limited to text only.

Apple’s ecosystem (Continuity Clipboard) allows seamless transfer text, images, videos and full files between iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, a level of full integration that Google will need to achieve in future updates.
Despitethis initial limitation, the integration of text synchronization at the system level represents the elimination of the need for third-party applications, offering a native and faster solution for millions of users.

Strengthening security and privacy
The introduction of a synchronized clipboard via the cloud immediately raises security concerns, as users often copy sensitive information such as passwords, card numbers or bank details.
Google has been preparing the ground for such massiveness by strengthening clipboard security in recent versions of Android:
- Automatic removal: Starting with Android 13, the system has mechanisms for automatically delete clipboard contents one hour after copying.
- Access Notification: There are also features that notify the user when a background program tries to access information stored on the clipboard.
These privacy measures will be essential to ensure that as the service becomes more widespread and connected to the cloud, sensitive user data remains protected in the new mobile-to-computer workflow.
