Will the Mac ever get Face ID? This latest rumor is a good sign.

Face ID has been part of the iPhone for nearly a decade and the iPad for almost as long, but the Mac still uses Touch ID. However, new rumors may offer hope that this may change.

Apple is developing ultra-slim Face ID components that could be perfect for the Mac

Leaker Instant Digital posted some interesting new details on Weibo over the weekend about the iPhone Air 2, which may also be relevant to future Macs.

While saying the new iPhone Air will add a second, horizontally aligned Ultra Wide rear camera, he mentioned a key change to Face ID.

Here’s what he wrote in Google Translate:

The iPhone Air (2) will have a horizontally positioned ultra-wide-angle lens. To overcome the internal space limitations, Apple customized the ultra-thin Face ID component from its suppliers.

Editor’s Note: My guess is that the MacBook will likely use this ultra-thin Face ID component as well.

Instant Digital clarifies that the MacBook possibility is just speculation. But it makes a lot of sense.

For years, the lack of Face ID on the Mac was thought to be largely due to the space limitations of a typical MacBook lid.

But with Apple already creating a new super-slim Face ID component for the iPhone Air, it could be a natural choice for future MacBooks and possibly iMacs.

The MacBook Pro is expected to get a major redesign later this year. Maybe Apple will surprise us and add Face ID among all the other rumored changes.

However, we’ll likely have to wait until a future model gets the first Mac with Face ID. Assuming, of course, that one day Apple brings this feature to the Mac.
