Google continues to work on his new version of the operating system that will combine Android with ChromeOS for desktop devices and which now already has a name, as it is known internally as Aluminum OSversion that aims to replace ChromeOS.
Over the past few years, the tech giant has made progress in bringing both operating systems together, starting to use parts of the Android stack, such as the Android Linux kernel and Android frameworks, to incorporate them into the base of the ChromeOS operating system. And also allows you to use apps from your Android mobile on your Chromebook.
In June of this year, Android Ecosystem President Sameer Samath went a step further and confirmed the company’s intent unify your operating system for Android mobile devices, with ChromeOSits operating system for Chromebook laptops so that they form a “single platform”.
Later, as part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit held in September, Google announced that this new version of the operating system for computers will will be presented during the next year 2026.
Now it became known that there is a project of a new operating system based on Android and ChromeOS internally known as Aluminum OS, continuing the “Chromium” naming style used to refer to the open source web browser on which Chrome is based.
In particular, the name appeared in a Google is hiring for a Senior Product Manager for Android, Laptops, and Tabletswhere it is clearly stated that the team in question is working on a “new Aluminum operating system based on Android”.
“The team is working on a the new Aluminum operating systemis based on Android, which is now focused on premium device and experience,” describes a job posting that Android Authority was able to access.
This announcement also specifies that the new operating system “built with artificial intelligence (AI) at its core”, As such, it is expected to be designed around the Gemini models as a base and also with an integrated assistant, all for PC.
The latter was also mentioned by Samath at the Qualcomm conference, when he clarified that the new “software” is the ability to “accelerate all advances in artificial intelligence” which are already implemented on Android.
However, the offer also shows what Google intends to do with this new operating system will become an option not only for budget laptops, but also for premium devices. This is because it clearly mentions device segmentation, which includes the terms “AL Mass Premium” and “AL Premium”.
REPLACE CHROMEOS
Despite the known progress of this operating system, Google’s plans for ChromeOS and whether it will continue to be a PC option or be replaced by an OS now known as Aluminum OS are unknown.
In this regard, the job offer specifies what the position is aimed at drive roadmap and ChromeOS commercial devices and Aluminum operating system in all formats, including laptops, tablets and “boxes”, the latter referring to mini PCs such as Chromeboxes.
All this indicates that both operating systems, ChromeOS and Aluminum OS, will co-exist. However, from the aforementioned media, they also mentioned that it was also detailed that part of the work would be to develop migration strategy from the current ChromeOS to the new Aluminum OS.
So does the job ad confirms Google’s intention to replace ChromeOS with Aluminum in the futureofficially discontinuing the current Chromebook operating system. However, the transition is expected to be phased in to support current ChromeOS devices.
