The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gave preliminary approval to Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard a few weeks ago. Despite this, the regulator has just launched a new investigation focusing on the tech giant and its plans for the cloud.
This will not be an investigation focused exclusively on Microsoft, as we know that the CMA is also targeting Amazon for the same reasons. In detail, the regulator will analyze its rates and other characteristics of its offer on the market.

Microsoft remains under the CMA’s scrutiny
Ofcom, the communications regulator in the United Kingdom, cited the CMA’s recent investigation into the cloud market and moves that could affect competition in the sector.
In its report, Ofcom states that it is primarily concerned about the position of Microsoft and Amazon in this market. He believes that if competition is not controlled, the overall market may deteriorate due to high data charges, various technical barriers and other restrictions.
For this reason, the CMA will now launch an independent investigation based on Ofcom data. It’s important to remember that it was the CMA that originally blocked Activision Blizzard’s purchase of anything related to cloud gaming.
Microsoft has already offered concessions in this regard, and the regulator decided to give preliminary approval to the acquisition. His final sentence will be announced by October 18. It is hoped that this new investigation will not hinder the process related to the purchase of Activision Blizzard, but nothing is certain.
