The city Dubai became the arena of technological and competitive milestone, hosting the World Finals of the first Red Bull Tetris Championship. Bringing together video games, music and drone technology, the ultimate showdown marked the before and after of eSports culture and international immersive entertainment.
After several months of qualifying rounds and more than 7 million games played, the event brought together the best participants from 60 countries. Fehmi Atalar, representing Turkey, became the champion, beating Leo Salorson of Peru in an unprecedented performance in the air.
The highlight of the day was the transformation of the Dubai Frame structure into a giant Tetris board. Above the building at a height of 150 meters, a park of 2,800 drones presented the games of the world final in real time. The iconic Tetris shapes were formed pixel by pixel with these devices, allowing people to watch the blocks fall and spin in the sky. In total, more than 4,000 drones were used in the entire show, which adapted every visual detail to the action of the game.
In the final, Atalar decided to play second after a quick pre-final. Despite Peru’s Solorson receiving a score of 57.164, the Turkish player showed accurate and fast play to reach a final score of 168.566 and secure his first Red Bull Tetris World crown.
After the victory, Atalar, who came into the tournament with a reputation for speed, described the evening as unique in his career: “I managed to play like a machine and in the end I was satisfied that I did not make any important mistakes.” He also shared that the win was “surreal” and a huge achievement for his country and himself.
Noted for taking the classic video game to a new level of speed and spectacle with three-minute rounds, the tournament featured ground-breaking elements such as gravity-altering and power-ups. Participants began their competitive journey on mobile devices, progressed through the PC stages and culminated in this unique sky-synced Tetris experience.
The event was attended by special guests from the history of the game, such as Alexey Pazhitnov, the creator of Tetris, and Hank Rogers, responsible for its global expansion.
