Despite being dismissed as myths, there are some practices in the video game community that have never been accepted as such. And a YouTuber recently debunked one of those beliefs, proving that PlayStation 3 games can run surprisingly well on remastered PlayStation 5 hardware.

In case you don’t know, let us tell you that the complex architecture of the PS3’s Cell processor, combined with the specialized nature of the PS5’s hardware, made emulation nearly impossible in the gaming industry. However, this expert’s experiment proved otherwise, commenting in the video that if PS5 chips don’t meet AMD’s strict quality standards, they’re usually thrown away.

But by disabling faulty cores, these chips can be reused for other tasks, such as cryptocurrency mining. AMD sold these modified chips to motherboard manufacturers such as ASRock, which built specialized mining rigs based on PS5 hardware.

A genius experiment of a curious YouTuber
Although these platforms offer a cheap solution for cryptocurrency enthusiasts, until now they were considered useless for gaming due to the lack of software support. Or so it was considered.
YouTuber Lowest Logan purchased one of these mining rigs and with some clever modifications managed to run PS3 games on it. After installing a custom Linux distribution and tweaking the system settings, he got the PS5 hardware to recognize the PS3 emulator.

And the results were surprising, as even with a significantly reduced clock speed and fewer CPU cores, the modified PS5 chip was able to run games like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue at 60fps at 1440p, and even LittleBigPlanet 3 was able to split 4K at 30 stable fps.

An experiment in which this YouTuber demonstrates the flexibility and power of the PS5’s base architecture, even when running at a fraction of its maximum power.
Also, in conclusion, the discovery has great implications for the preservation of classic games. Running PS3 games on more modern hardware allows you to enjoy them with better performance and potentially new features. In addition, it opens up new possibilities for modifications and customization.
