“Nintendo left us at the altar.” A former Sony executive recalls what was a key ingredient in the origin of Playstation: revenge – the SNES

In connection with the 30th anniversary of Playstation, it’s time to remember the advantages of the company’s first console. Released in 1994 in Japan and the following year in other territories, Sony’s console had several innovations that helped revitalize the video game market. Its birth, however, was not without bad sentiment in the industry..

As Shawn Layden, former president of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, told Eurogamer UK, we wouldn’t even be talking about Playstation if The deal they made with Nintendo in the nineties would be done. With CD-ROMs rumored to be the future of the industry, both Japanese companies teamed up to create a CD-ROM version of the Super Nintendo. But at the last moment, the company decided to refuse.

An unexpected twist in the alleged hacking of the tax office: the investigation points to an attack on an external company

“We were going to build – or rather we built – an optical drive peripheral for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo realized that cartridges had already outgrown memory, so we – Ken Kutaragi to be exact – we created CD technology. for SNES And we were almost ready, I think it was at CES (Computer Entertainment Show) in 1993, we were going to announce the collaboration. Nintendo left us at the altarafter making a last-minute U-turn and choosing Philips.”

The worst part of all of this is that, as Layden mentions, the case was pretty much over. A prototype Nintendo Playstation exists and images of it have since been released. That’s when Kutaragi decided that they would also turn around and create their own console. Quite a risk at the time as the company had no experience in this field.

Nintendo lost with the change

While Sony didn’t have it easy at first and the plan to build their own console took time to come to fruition, they were left with the worst part of the original deal on Nintendo’s part. I fear that Sony will use its alliance with Super Nintendo to gain power in the industryinstead, the company decided to enter into an alliance with Philips, a decision that even the press seemed to raise eyebrows at the time, as it seemed ill-conceived and less solid.

It didn’t take long for the results to become visible. At some point in the following months, a peripheral that Philips was developing for Nintendo (the SNES-CD, this time controlled by Nintendo, as opposed to the Nintendo Playstation) was canceledand Nintendo ditched some of their characters instead Philips CD-iconsole they were developing. It was a failure, and the Nintendo games it had are considered some of the worst in the company’s history.
