Learn how this data collection methodology helps collect factors that birds have when diving.
The world’s coastlines are changing rapidly, and we still know little about what’s going on below the surface, especially in areas where ships, buoys, or satellites can’t accurately measure. To counter this problem, an international investigation in which Dr. Susana Cardenas Alaizaused a solution as innovative as it is surprising: seabirds equipped with sensors that record the temperature, depth and movement of the water as they dive.
The project collected data from 17 species in 17 countriesshowing thousands of daily dives that describe ocean conditions in great detail. These records also show how birds use Marine protected areasproviding valuable information for its management and conservation.
