So far and in terms of home consoles, Sony’s only disaster was the PlayStation 3 and comparing it to the Japanese company’s own figures, well 87 million units were solda figure many would like. From its very origins, this console was extremely controversial because its commitments were very ambitious and considered excessive in terms of hardware and development processes. Shawn Layden thinks Sony took a huge risk with the PS3
During the interview with EurogamerSean Layden, former head of PlayStation, spoke about the PS3 era and the lessons it taught the brand after it failed to achieve a third consecutive success, ran into hardware problems and barely lived up to expectations.
In this regard, the manager felt that everything was overblown and the big mistake was to put the hardware at the center of the strategy, rather than the games or the players: “The PS3 was the Icarus moment for Sony. We had PS1, PS2.. . “And now we’re building a supercomputer! And we’re going to put Linux on it! And we’re going to do all those things. We were flying too close to the sun and we were lucky and happy. survived this experience, but it taught us a lot.”

What lessons did the failure of the PS3 leave for Sony?
Layden later noted that another great piece of knowledge the PS3 left behind was that the console was no longer viewed as a multimedia device. Yes, you can have entertainment applications, but they complement each other because the focus is on the game: “We also learned that the game has to be at the center of the car. It’s not about whether I can stream movies or play music. Can I order one pizza while I watch TV and play games? No, just turn it into a better video game machine.
If you missed it: A player used their teacher’s credit card and spent more than $1,000 without authorization on the PlayStation Store; now a police report has been filed against him
On a related note, Shawn Layden also mentioned the possibility that at some point PlayStation Studios games will make their way to Xbox, as is the case with Microsoft’s current multi-platform strategy. In this regard, the manager pointed out that this will never happen, because there is no point in launching games on a platform that does not have such a global reach as Sony’s consoles.
