Earlier this year, Google launched a virtual fitting app called Doppl that uses artificial intelligence to help users visualize how different outfits will look on them. The company has now added a shopping search feed to the app that offers clothing recommendations with direct links to merchants.
In a recent blog post, Google said the idea behind this new feed is to help users “discover new favorites,” try them on their virtual avatar, and shop directly from Doppl. This discovery feed works as a personalized style feed that reflects the user’s preferences and suggestions based on past interactions.
Google says that almost all products featured in the Discovery feed are available for purchase and have direct links to retailers, making it easy for users to go from finding clothes to completing purchases. The Discovery feed also features AI-generated videos of items that give users an accurate idea of how an outfit might fit and move in real life.
Doppl’s Inventions feed appears to be inspired by the shopping features of short-form video apps like TikTok and Instagram, which allow creators to quickly add shopping links to items featured in their videos. However, by using artificial intelligence to make clothing recommendations, Doppl gives users a more personalized shopping experience than those platforms. Additionally, by combining clothing search, virtual fitting and shopping links into one feed, the Google app streamlines the entire shopping experience, eliminating the need to visit multiple websites or apps.
The Shopable Discovery Feed is available to users 18 years of age and older in the United States. You can try it out by downloading the Dopple app for Android or iOS. The app is free to use and could change the way people shop for clothes online. However, early reviews indicate that it still has a long way to go before it can be considered a market disruptor.
