POLKADOT STINGRAY’s Pokémon “Ghost Dive” Animated Music Video is ghost-type wickedness

POLKADOT STINGRAY has released a new jazzy song titled A ghostly dive September 20 in collaboration with the music project Pokémon Music Collective.

Together with the release of the song A ghostly divethe group unveiled a short animated music video themed around the five Ghost Pokemon. The Pokemon consist of Gengar, Driflan, Mimikyu, Drippy, and Chandelure, who unleash all kinds of evil.

The song also incorporates an eerie yet iconic 8-bit Lavender city theme originally from the Gameboy handheld game Pokemon red and blue. The band uses this sample in unpredictable ways to create what is primarily an upbeat, jazzy song.

The first-person animated short features the main character suddenly waking up in his ghost Pokemon-themed bedroom. Approaching the window and picking up the binoculars, the character sees Driflan and Drippy hovering. The main character then leaves the house, goes to a scary and creepy forest nearby, looking for these Pokemon, and gets more than they bargained for.

The song was released as part of the music project Pokémon Music Collective, which has the same name as the release. Record label Universal Music Japan’s website states:

Pokémon Music Collective is a music project based on the concept of “building from sounds used in Pocket monsters series of games to bring new music to the world.” The idea is to gather artists from different genres and release them under the mentioned project name with this concept in mind.

The band appears on a compilation EP with other artists tasked with creating songs about Pokémon. This includes solo artist imase, K-pop group ENHYPHEN, solo artist Michael Kaneko, and finally, rappers Matt Cabb, BBY NABE and Charlu.
