There aren’t many PS3 emulators out there and many of the ones that are out there, RPCS3 is considered the best. The emulator’s developers have just announced a port of the app for ARM-based Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices.
This expands the compatibility of the PS3 emulator, as it was previously only available for x64 systems. Support for ARM devices naturally means that an iOS or Android port is on the way, but the developers say otherwise. In the announcement, the team shared that they have no plans to port the app to mobile yet.
If you’re wondering why, there are several reasons that prevent developers from moving forward with smartphone ports. RPCS3’s developer cites community issues other Android emulators have faced. For example, PS2 Emulator AetherSX2 for example. The sole developer behind it was forced to stop the project due to “death threats” received from “toxic users”
In addition, there are people who distribute modified versions of emulators, ignoring open source licenses. The developers of RPCS3 spoke about Google’s ineffectiveness in combating these modified versions, which masquerade as emulators but are outright malware.
Of course, this does not mean that the RPCS3 developers will completely eliminate the Android and iOS ports. However, at this stage it seems that these mobile ports are a long way off, which is a shame. Recently released high-end phones are more than capable of emulating PS3 games. In fact, Snapdragon 8 Elite flagships are even making headlines for being able to emulate modern AAA games through PC emulators.
